  1. The balloons in the parade are controlled by balloon pilots who must train 3 times a year in order to pilot the balloons properly. They practice in wide fields and use ropes to pull the balloons; these ropes are called 'bones.'

  2. For the Macy's Thanksgivings Day Parade, many people each year volunteer to walk with the gigantic and very impressive balloons that are displayed. But, to participate there are certain requirements you have to meet. Since each balloon contains about 12,000 cubic feet of helium, it is extremely heavy and can actually lift about 750 pounds. It takes about 90 people to handle these balloons and if you wish to be a handler, you must weigh at least 120 pounds and be in good health.

  3. The Character Balloons Debuted In 1927.

Three years after the fist parade, a new tradition was added to the Macy's parade. Large balloons looking like silly characters floated through the streets of New York along with the usual celebrations and festivities.

  4. In the first few year's of the Macy's Parade, since it was originally a Christmas themed parade, some people thought it shouldn't have been held on thanksgiving day because they thought it would interfere with thanksgiving. However it was the only day where the children would be out of school and traffic would be low.

  5. "Wind and Giant Balloons are not a Good Combination" is about how there are so many pose threats to these balloon, such as electric wires, rain and tree branches. But the biggest promise for these balloons is the wind. For example, in 2005, an M&M balloon was tangled on a streetlamp, which caused the lamp to fall and hurting two people. Because the wind and the weather in general, the balloons are set at a height because of its size and weather. Now if the wind is too strong, the balloons are not allowed to go out.

  6. My article was about the helium shortage that happened in 1958.This shortage almost caused the parade to actually almost be grounded. Only one time since 1927 has it been grounded and that was in 1971 due to the winds. Next But the company collaborated with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and the rigging specialists Traynor & Hansen Corporation to come up with a creative solution. This solution was to fill up the balloons were filled with air and dangled from “large, mobile construction derricks

  7. 1. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was intended originally to be a Christmas Parade and debuted in 1924 as a way to celebrate the expansion the Macy's Flagship Manhattan Store. It began on 145th Street and continued down to Macy's huge store on 34th street. People would watch Santa come down as he was in the Parade. I was such a success that Macy's made it an annual event and in 1927 it became the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
    6. Macy's Parade designers collaborated with Walt Disney to create a 40 ft tall and 23 ft wide Mickey Mouse Balloon. It took 25 people to hold down the balloon.

  9. Meghan Flood #10 The Macy day parade floats are not cheap. They are designed by in-house by Macy's artist called balloonatics. They pencil sketch each design a year before the parade. The sketches are then followed up by scaled-down clay model that is used to create the casts of the balloons. They create two, one for technical details, and the other is painted with the balloon's colors. The models are then put in water to see how much helium they'll need to float. Finally after everything is done they scan by computer, and the fabric pieces are cut and heat-sealed to create the various air chambers of the balloon. Once that is done they paint the balloon white, because the paint could crack. The balloons are stored in a warehouse.
